Forage as the foundation of every ration

Paard Met Ruwvoer In Mond Zonlicht

Ruwvoer als basis van ieder rantsoen

Forage is the basis of your horse’s diet. It stimulates gut function and supports a healthy intestinal flora. By chewing forage thoroughly, a horse produces more saliva, which contributes to good digestion. Horses that receive insufficient forage, or too much concentrate in a single meal, are at greater risk of digestive problems.

Forage quality can vary considerably. Essential nutrients and energy that are not, or not sufficiently, provided by forage can be supplemented with concentrates. To determine which nutrients need to be added, it is important to know the nutritional value of the forage.

What can you check yourself?

What Can You Check Yourself?

With your own observations, you cannot determine whether the forage contains the right nutrients and values. But there are a few things you can look out for:

  • No mold
  • Fresh smell
  • Adequate structure for good gut function (run your hand through the hay; if it pricks lightly, the structure is good)
  • Low levels of dust and sand
