Optimal nutrition for pregnant and lactating mares

During the early months of pregnancy, the foal develops slowly, and the mare’s needs can be met with a normal diet; meaning forage and concentrate tailored to her level of work. From the eighth month onwards, however, her demand for energy and protein increases, and the concentrate can be replaced by Voermeesters Merrie.

In addition to energy and protein, minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc, and manganese become increasingly important. In the final months of pregnancy, it is advisable to offer the mare several smaller meals throughout the day. As the foal grows, stomach capacity decreases, which raises the risk of colic and impaction.

Lactation period

The lactation period is the most demanding stage nutritionally. If the mare does not receive enough nutrients, she will draw on her own reserves to maintain consistent nutrient levels in her milk. The result: significant weight loss. Conversely, if she receives too many nutrients immediately after foaling, her milk composition remains stable, but the excess can lead to digestive upsets.

A well-balanced diet is therefore essential for both mare and foal, exactly what Voermeesters provides.

Voermeesters Merrie

Voermeesters Merrie

Voermeesters Merrie is a 10 mm pellet specially developed for pregnant and lactating mares. The pellet supports optimal growth and bone density of the foal, while also stimulating milk production. To give the mare maximum support during this special period, Voermeesters Merrie contains the essential levels of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements.
