Voermeesters becomes the first horse feed brand to achieve GMO-Controlled certification

Voermeesters is the first horse feed brand to be certified GMO-controlled. This means that Voermeesters works exclusively with non-GMO raw materials, that is, ingredients that are not genetically modified. At Voermeesters, the wellbeing of people, horses, and the environment always comes first. From this perspective, it was a natural step for Voermeesters to lead the way and set itself apart from other horse feed brands.

Maize and soy are among the crops most often genetically modified and used in horse feed. Genetic modification is a collection of techniques in which the hereditary characteristics of organisms, including plants, are permanently altered by human intervention. This can involve manually cutting into genetic traits or exposing plant DNA to chemicals or radiation. The goal is often to make plants stronger and/or more profitable.

The effect of genetic modification

The debate about genetic modification is ongoing. Its long-term impact on health, climate, and the environment is still unknown. That is why Voermeesters has chosen to work exclusively with non-modified raw materials. In addition, Voermeesters uses only sustainably sourced soy. Why take risks when excellent alternatives are available, at the same price?

Certification

To guarantee this choice, Voermeesters is GMP+ GMO-controlled certified. Strict requirements apply to the use of GMO-free raw materials and the controls surrounding them. The certification also monitors possible cross-contamination during storage, production, and transport.

GMO-controlled vs. GMO-free

Voermeesters horse feed is at least 99% GMO-free. However, because a modified particle may inadvertently enter during transport or storage (cross-contamination), Dutch legislation does not allow the label “GMO-free.” For this reason, Voermeesters uses the term GMO-controlled.
