When should you give your horse extra electrolytes?
Electrolytes are essential minerals, including sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium. A healthy horse that only sweats occasionally will naturally restore these minerals through its regular feed. In that case, adding extra electrolytes isn’t necessary. You can, however, offer a salt lick so your horse can choose to take in extra salt and minerals when needed.
The importance of electrolytes for horses
Your horse needs electrolytes to properly regulate fluid balance, acidity levels, and the functioning of muscles and nerves. When a horse has a shortage of electrolytes after heavy sweating, this can lead to muscle soreness, cramps, or even tying-up. A deficiency may also cause your horse or pony to feel tired for longer than necessary, while dehydration can become a serious risk. Read more about electrolytes for horses here.
When to supplement electrolytes?
When horses work hard and sweat a lot, their fluid balance can easily become disturbed. This may cause them to lose their appetite or interest in drinking. In the following situations, it’s especially important to support your horse by providing extra electrolytes:
- After prolonged sweating
- In warm, humid or muggy weather
- During intense or long-lasting exercise (such as endurance, eventing or long trail rides)
- After a competition or event
- After long transport
- During illness
